The tray reflects your settings which you have stored within the extended status information. This lets you see very quickly what status you currently have, and what user picture you have chosen. Furthermore, you can quickly and easily change your status at this point, by clicking in the tray with the right or left mouse button. Furthermore, your status message appears, which can also be changed by a click of the mouse.
